Best way to get internal layer output as feature?

Hi, I am trying to use pre-trained token-level embedding encoded by models like BERT, and I wonder which is the best way recommended to do this:

  1. During computing the embedding, as for the pre-trained model, should I use “model.train()” + “with torch.no_grad()” OR “model.eval()”

  2. Specifically to the BERT like model, which layer is recommended to use?
    2.1) the last output layer or pooler layer?
    2.2) feature before layer norm or after layer norm? before or after dense function?

I guess you directly want to use the embeddings and not really train or fine-tune the BERT model.

  1. If it’s a pre-trained model, the embeddings are already trained too. So, you can directly proceed with model.eval() with torch.no_grad() like you would for any model.

  2. (2.1) The last layer if you’re planning to further fine-tune your model.

  3. (2.2) After layer norm, after dense function (depends on your task though).
