I’ve been exploring the intersection of deep learning and real-time game environments. While PyTorch is the de-facto standard for research, I’ve noticed a significant “implementation gap” when it comes to beginners trying to deploy PyTorch-based agents (like those trained with RL) into engines like Unity or Unreal.
Most of the community focus is on high-level research, but for game devs, the challenge is often the “scaffolding”; connecting the model logic to game-loop decision trees and environment-aware navigation.
I’m currently building a structured roadmap called AI Powered Game Dev for Beginners. My goal is to simplify how we use frameworks like Unity ML-Agents (which uses PyTorch under the hood) to train autonomous NPCs and generate procedural worlds.
I’d love to start a discussion here: For those working on RL in PyTorch, what do you find is the biggest bottleneck when moving a model from a gymnasium environment into a production-ready game engine? Is it the inference overhead, or the complexity of the API wrappers?
