Add hook to subset of layers using loop

Problem

I would like to compute some statistics using intermediate layer of ResNet and obviously I need to use .register_forward_hook() to do this. However, the number of intermediate bottleneck blocks is just so large and it would be cumbersome (and non-elegant) to write a lot of model.<bottleneck>.register_forward_hook(compute_statistics)

This thread provide a way to add hook to all layers in a loop, essentially it does

for layer in model.children():
  layer.register_forward_hook(<something>)

However, I do not want to compute the information I do not need. Specifically, I am interested in the output of basic block in ResNet, namely bottleneck0, bottleneck1… in layer1 through layer4 (shown below)

Would it work, if you use named_children and just register the hooks for your wanted layers?

Thank you, this helps but doe not fully resolve the problem.

By using named_children and simple regular expression, I now have

import re
from torchvision.models import resnet50

model = resnet50(pretrained=False)
for name, layer in model.named_children():
    if re.match(r"layer\d", str(name)):
        for block in layer.children():
            print(block)

which indeed returns the bottleneck block I want

Bottleneck(
  (conv1): Conv2d(64, 64, kernel_size=(1, 1), stride=(1, 1), bias=False)
  (bn1): BatchNorm2d(64, eps=1e-05, momentum=0.1, affine=True, track_running_stats=True)

    (1): BatchNorm2d(256, eps=1e-05, momentum=0.1, affine=True, track_running_stats=True)
  )
)
Bottleneck(
  (conv1): Conv2d(256, 64, kernel_size=(1, 1), stride=(1, 1), bias=False)
  (bn1): BatchNorm2d(64, eps=1e-05, momentum=0.1, affine=True, track_running_stats=True)
  (conv2): Conv2d(64, 64, kernel_size=(3, 3), stride=(1, 1), padding=(1, 1), bias=False)

...

However, in order to register hook, I need to use syntax like model.<layer>.<bottleneck>.register_forward_hook(...). But it is not clear to me how to access these variable names <layer> and <bottleneck> in my code (since they are actually string).
