Muti-GPU Training - RuntimeError: one of the variables needed for gradient computation has been modified by an inplace operation

Hi,

I am trying to use swin transformer backbone with my modified mdetr codebase. The code is running perfectly fine on a single GPU but giving attached error when running on multiple GPUs using torch.distributed.launce.

I tried setting up torch.autograd.set_detect_anomaly(True) and it pointed out to the line 133 of swin_transformers.py. Note that the error goes away if I set the requires_grad=False for relative_position_bias_table parameter.

I am using torch 1.8.0+cu11 on NVIDIA A6000 GPUs. I will appreciate any help to resolve this issue. Thank You

Moving to distributed for better visibility.

@Muhammad_Maaz Are you using DDP here for multiple GPUs? If so Distributed: RuntimeError: one of the variables needed for gradient computation has been modified by an inplace operation: [torch.cuda.FloatTensor [2048]] is at version 4; expected version 3 instead · Issue #62474 · pytorch/pytorch · GitHub might be related.

@Muhammad_Maaz Can you set broadcast_buffers=False in DDP to see if that helps resolve the issue? Also, if you could provide us with a full repro script, would help a lot more in debugging.

Thanks, @pritamdamania87,

Yes, I am using the DDP, and setting broadcast_buffers=False worked for me. Now I am wondering if it can affect any training outputs/accuracies?

Also, all the code is available at the main branch of GitHub - mmaaz60/mdetr. You just need to set requires_grad=True at mdetr/swin_transformers.py at fe1394c67e76a6c7e521bbda77d8294714038a3a · mmaaz60/mdetr · GitHub for reproducing the issue. I know it is a big codebase but I don’t have any shorter version for reproducing this behavior.

I believe the error was coming from BatchNorm. I think for best accuracy you should convert all your BatchNorm layers to SyncBatchNorm
